Do your translation justice.

Legal language services with professionalism, accuracy, and expertise.

I’m Erica Schauble and I provide high-quality and appropriate foreign language translation services to the public and legal sectors. I serve government agencies, law firms, and foreign nationals that require English-language translations of Spanish- and Italian-language legal documents. Because I specialize exclusively in the fields of international affairs, criminal justice, and immigration, my clients will rest assured that I am already familiar with the context of their documents. That’s why my translations are not just linguistically accurate—they are also well-researched for functional equivalence and forensic accuracy.

Background and Specializations

International Affairs and Criminal Justice

Spanish to English

I graduated with a Master of Arts in International Crime and Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. When I translate documents dealing with international affairs or criminal justice, I do so from the unique perspective of both a linguist and an international crime and justice specialist.

I understand that legal translation is not just the translation of a foreign language into English, but also the translation of foreign legal concepts, institutions, and contexts for an American audience.

Experience translating and reviewing:

  • Official reports

  • Cross-national questionnaires

  • Court decisions

  • International agreements

  • Newspaper articles

Forensic Translation

Spanish to English

I have experience translating evidence for prosecutions. I abide by the forensic translation standards enshrined by the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT). I treat every translation as if I will have to appear in court as an expert witness to explain my translation choices. I pay close attention to the subtle details in original documents, striving to ensure that no clues within a document become obscured by the translation process.

Experience translating and reviewing:

  • Letters to the court

  • Victim statements

  • Transcriptions of inmate telephone call recordings

  • Suspected forgeries

  • Suspected false statements

Official Certificates and Documents

Spanish to English, Italian to English

I have experience translating and preparing official certificates and documents for submission to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and to foreign academic equivalency evaluators.

With thousands of such translations under my belt, I have seen many official certificate and document models—such as birth certificates from Italy and engineering transcripts from Mexico—hundreds of times. I am able to quickly identify (and avoid) the most common translation pitfalls in this sub-field of legal translation.

Experience translating and reviewing:

  • Birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates

  • Academic diplomas and transcripts

  • Employment letters

  • Apostilles

  • Historical and/or foreign cursive handwriting

Professional Translation Approach

Strict Adherence to High Ethical Standards

As a member of the American Translators Association (ATA), I adhere to the ATA Code of Ethics and Professional Practice.

Prioritization of Accurate Translation from the Foreign Language

Above all, I strive to preserve the intended or implicit meaning communicated by original texts’ authors.

My university-level studies in translation have prepared me to be an "investigator" of language. I perform rigorous research in my foreign languages, ensuring that my understanding of original texts goes beyond surface-level linguistic understanding and delves into expert-level content understanding. After researching language in its context, I use terminology and style in a way that is precise, natural, and up-to-date.

Focus on Audience and Readability in American English

I always translate into my native language: American English.

My translations undergo multiple rounds of quality assurance. After I confirm that my translations are faithful to the foreign languages, I make sure that my translations can be read with ease. I produce translations that read naturally, as if the texts were originally written in American English. In other words, I produce my English-language translations with your target audience in mind. My best translations read as if they were written by the lawyer, government official, or subject-matter expert who drafted the original document.

About Me

Front row, center: Erica Schauble, translator and owner of Schauble Language Services

I began studying Spanish and Italian translation at Hunter College in 2015. After discovering my love of language and translation, I immediately decided to apply my skills in another field that I am passionate about: criminal justice.

I began specializing my translation skills as an intern at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and as an intern with the New York State Unified Court System. My hands-on experience translating for criminal investigations and observing bilingual court proceedings under the tutelage of certified court interpreters further entrenched my desire to provide high-quality and impartial language services for the voiceless, who still must interact with the criminal justice system and the government as a whole.

Understanding the need to provide language services informed by a deep awareness of foreign crime and justice cultures, I pursued a Master of Arts in International Crime and Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Simultaneously, I worked as an in-house legal translator and reviewer at an immigration law firm in Manhattan. I also spent time in Washington, D.C., translating as an intern at the Organization of American States (OAS) and as an intern at the U.S. Department of State. There, I gained practical, first-hand exposure to the international legal system and diplomacy and was extensively mentored by senior legal advisors and diplomatic translators.

Upon graduation, I was added to the U.S. Department of State’s roster of independent contract translators in the Spanish to English language combination. Dedicated to ensuring my availability to provide high-quality language services to my country, I launched Schauble Language Services.
